The creator of my beloved 蜡笔小新 comics, 臼井儀人 had met with an unfortunate accident and passed away a few days ago.
I am very shocked by this news and hereby mourn his death, as well as the end of 蜡笔小新.
I have just gotten around 20 蜡笔小新 comic books from my cousin and was just reading through them a few weeks ago, and had been very unhappy about how the author had made 松阪老师's fiance die in a terrorist attack just after they had reconciled, turning the story into a rather tragic one, which is very different from the 小新 comics I am used to.
I hate stories which kill characters off when there is definitely no need to, like Jiraiya in Naruto and lots of other comics, but 蜡笔小新 is meant to be fun and idiotic and I was hence rather taken aback when I read that part of the story, even though of course it had a sort of happy ending at the end.
And now the author had passed away, perhaps it is true then there is nothing such as a perfect life, a perfect story or a perfect ending.
Lives are lost in meaningless, accidental ways all the time.
As much as I like 蜡笔小新, I am not sure I welcome the idea of letting another author continue with this series, it'll be like Peanuts, really. Never-ending but never going to be as good as it was.
I'll always remember the first few dozens of 蜡笔小新, the nonsensical, idiotic and madly funny comics which will make me laugh out even on trains and buses, providing me with the simplest joy.
R.I.P.
