I read an interview of Kumar on Straits Times the other day, and he mentioned something about how Singaporeans tend to laugh when they're faced with something that makes them uncomfortable.
It reminded me of a scene in Suspect X (嫌疑犯X的献身), where it was supposed to be the climax of the most dramatic scene, when the culprit started to howl and cry after realising all he had sacrificed will be in vain. The whole theatre was laughing at that time, after some time even I myself started to feel the urge to laugh with them, over such a dramatic scene which is not supposed to be funny at all.
While I was watching Watchmen yesterday, the same thing happened, several times the audience laughed when it was supposed to be a most unsuitable time, mostly terribly violent and bloody moments. I didn't follow suit this time because I really really didn't see what was there to be laughed at, mostly because half the time I was shutting my eyes and squirming over the violent acts in the movie.
I also noticed some people tend to laugh during the not-so-subtle nude and sexual scenes as well.
I supposed Kumar must be a rather keen observer of life, because this point would never have occured to me if he hadn't said it in the papers.
Why do people laugh when they feel uncomfortable? Am I one of them too?
Why do we laugh in the face of violence, sex and desperation?

When I watched Suspect X, no one laughed during that scene - the whole cinema was dead quiet, because that scene was so 沉重。 Hm... Funny how we were surrounded by two completely different crowds.
I don't laugh in the face of violence, sex or desperation; most certainly not the first.
Sometimes I do laugh when I encounter moments of uncomfortable awkwardness, just to ease the tension.
Miao: Ya i wonder why, it was a packed theatre when i watched it, i think some of the crowd might have laughed just because someone else did, just to ease their discomfort.
Weishi: Ya actually I wonder they laughed because of the discomfort, or because they simply feel the need to express a reaction to response to dramatic scenes, or because they actually do find it funny, and I wonder which is worse.
Hm the cinema was also quite packed when I watched Suspect X, because I watched on the day it was released. Actually I think local movie-goers really laugh at the most inappropriate moments... Sometimes the scenes were really not funny, violent, erotic or depressing, but they'd laugh anyway. :/ I don't understand why either.
Yes indeed, in some moments I can reveal that I approve of with you, but you may be in the light of other options.
